If the race is limited by the number of laps, there are no problems with automatic refueling.
How do I get the fuel calculator to work based on time left to finish and not on the number of laps?

I've never had any issues with automatic refueling in timed races. Just click "Enable iRacing auto refueling when entering pit in race" and you should be good to go...
